Alan -
Too bad there are no photos of the insides. Regardless, with an order date
code of 1951, it came with tubes. Some ham must have put transistors in it.

Subject: [armyradios] PRC-6 on epay, with transistors???
It sez,
"WHAT A FIND! Here is a military RADIO RECEIVER-TRANSMITTER (RT-196/PRC-6)
by Raytheon Mfg. - WITH a RADIO DIRECTION FINDER (AT-1082/PRC). The tubes
in the radio receiver/transmitter were replaced with transistors, and it
uses civilian flashlight batteries for power. This is a FULLY FUNCTIONAL
unit, both in GREAT condition, as you can see in the photos! The strap on
the radio receiver is LIKE NEW! "
Could it be?
