[Milsurplus] What is it? AN/GRC-13

Ken,
The GRC-13 is to the GRC-9 as the GRC-14 to the GRC-19 ;-)
The GRC-13 is a Marine Corps equivalent of the GRC-9. It was manufactured by
RCA, to Navy standards. The tube line-up, power output and the frequency
range are similar to those of the GRC-9. It uses accessories which are
somewhat similar to the GRC-9 but the power connector is different. The
GRC-13 is more compact, and in shape factor and size is similar to the Navy
TBX. For stand-alone receiving, it has a front-panel accessible compartment
for a BA-48 battery pack, I have the feeling that the GRC-13 was intended to
replace the old TBX.
The GRC-13, however is not tunable - it is set up with 10 crystal controlled
channels within its covered frequency range.
I think it fell out of favor with the powers-to-be, because only a precious
few are ever seen in "captivity", especially with the accessories. I've
acquired one without any accessories about 8 years ago or so, and I'm still
trying to find enough circuit diagrams and tune-up instructions that I could
re-crystal it for 80 and 40 M (in fact, mine came with one of the original
channels set in the 40 M band) and put it on the air.
Regarding the GRC-14: It's the Marine Corps equivalent of the GRC-19. Same
power output, AM/CW/RTTY as the full GRC-19 system (T-195 tx, R-392 rx plus
ancillary RTTY equipment), consisting of a T-631 transmitter, a separate
power supply (24 VDC or 115 VAC input), 2 R-808 receivers. The GRC-14
doesn't need an external RTTY keyer and decoder as the GRC-19: the R-808
receiver has a built-in RTTY decoder, and the T-631 has a direct input from
the teletype loop for FSK keying. That system fizzled out as well, as it is
much heavier and less reliable than the GRC-19.
