The green stuff on connector threads may well be an anti-galling compound, especially if the connectors are bare
aluminum. Aluminum on aluminum galls (cold welds) and so the compound is needed. I don't think it's needed on the
newer OD colored connectors, since the hard anodize prevents the galling. BTW, I don't think it's ordinary
grease, but am not sure if it's 50+ years old.
