I agree with not sealing it.  I don't think the
crystal was ever sealed.  It's just that MFP came
along, and even then many parts were supposed to
be covered with masking tape.  Someone can look
at a BC-779 and compare.  That crystal is not in
an oscillator circuit, so the rules are a bit
different.  If you want to play with a bad crystal
of that physical size, and larger, you can grind
the sides a little bit to get it to work.  Sides
have little if anything to do with frequency.
