I posted the original sand story to a couple of other lists and received the
following replies, which are quite interesting:

Dr. McCrone is a fascinating guy to hear speak. Considered a worldwide
authority in his field
(Microscopy), he became noticed by the general public through his analysis of
the Shroud of
Turin.

I was unaware of his work in the war effort-interesting.

Bet one of those Japanese balloons would be amongst the most scarce of captured
MVs to collect!

Thanks for sharing,
David Doyle

"The only WWII fatalities from enemy action on the mainland North America
sadly occurred May 5, 1945, near Bly, Oregon, when a family encountered one
of the explosive bombs from a balloon. The resulting explosion killed six
people."

Here's a better one:

"On May 5, 1945, a pregnant woman and five children were killed by a balloon
bomb while they were on a church picnic near Bly, Ore. Other than this
incident, the balloons caused only a few small fires and a minor power
outage at the Hanford facility in Washington State, where ironically,
plutonium for the first atomic bomb was being prepared."
