Jim:
Allow me to make a couple of points. The HF box is a band switched
broadband preamp. Output frequency = input frequency.
In regard to building a super receiver to follow the VHF-126, don't
bother. Since this is a free-running VHF VFO, it's not very stable in
the world of people used to synthesizers and 0.000025% frequency
stability. In addition, it uses state of the art circuitry from 1939,
which means it is not going to be very sensitive either. Feeding it into
a normal AM receiver with 6 to 10 KHz IF bandwidth would mean not having
to re tune every few minutes, but chasing SSB or CW would be a challenge.
It should work good on FM, particularly if fed into a receiver with AFC.
As far as output frequency is concerned, look at 20 meters. Hook the
output up to a reasonably sensitive receiver and tune around 14.250. If
you don't hear a rushing noise from the converter, tune up and down a
little ways, there should be a peak in there somewhere.
The IF would have been chosen to be as high as possible to reduce images.
But, it would not be on 10 meters, as many ham receivers did not yet
cover 10, as evidenced by the RME 10/11 meter converter. 15 meters was
not yet a ham band, so it wasn't there either. Thus, 20 meters.
Good luck. I drooled over the RME ads, but they were always way beyond
my budget.
