Phil:

That was one of the common ways to disable things such as crystal filters 
and BFOs when the capacitor was turned to one end or the other. Are you 
sure you don't have the capacitor shaft 180 degrees around from what it 
should be?

I know the front panel of my BC-342 is labled such that if the phasing knob is 
turned all the way to the right side, it disables the crystal filter. However, that 
presupposes that the knob is on correctly.

And the R-1004 in the AN/GRC-109 does the same thing with the BFO pitch 
control.

The tuning capacitor has the very end of one plate bent so that when the cap 
is turned far enough, it shorts out the capacitor and thus disables the BFO.
