wonder if it ever worked?

Hi,
Well, I just got finished going through the Xtal filter can with a fine
toothed comb. Just getting that critter out of the BC-342 is a chore in
itself!
Anyway, I found the problem, at least I'm pretty sure I did as I still have
the task of putting that can back in the set. It turned out to be a bent
plate on the variable capacitor, causing that cap to be a dead short as soon
as it was turned just the tiniest bit clockwise! I wonder if that thing
ever worked at all in the past 60 years as it doesn't appear that anyone has
ever been in that can. Unless wear in the shaft bearing allowed the rotor
to shift "just enough" to allow it to touch the stator. It didn't take
drastic measures to correct it, just a small tweak on one of the stator
plates that was obviously bent.
Then I went ahead and replaced the two .01 capacitors while I was in there.
Now, the big job of re-installing this thing begins!
