Well said Hue. There are few jobs where a person *voluntarily* signs
up for low pay and the possible of having his head blown off during
normal duty. A study was done several years ago that seems to make
sense, while maybe of dubious scientific origin, that stated that
the way criminals are these days, especially in the larger cities, a LEO is
more likely to be killed during a routine shift than an infantryman would
be in average combat. (don't remember if they were using WWII or
Viet Nam specs or who did the study, it has been a while...)

Lotsa cities are becoming war zones these days, and the guys on the
beat -- officers with families and children - are being killed every day.
Be they "regular" police officers, border guards, DEA field folks, of
whatever their jobs are to keep the rest of us safe, and indeed
they *SHOULD* get our respect. Most of the cops I've known through
the years say they get very few if any thanks for what they do, that
couple with low police pay in many cities is the cause of many officers'
bad attitudes. And we seem to remember those bad apples more than
than the good ones. Even those perceived as "bad" are simply trying to
do their job. I'm not excusing the overzealous "Oh boy I have a
badge and a gun, I'm gonna go kick some butt!" But that attitude
can be seen in almost any career field, not just cops.

Most of us respect our Military personnel and give them
great thanks, and for the most part we always have - and
we always should. But we need to give that same thanks and
respect to the folks who fight the battles in the streets
here at home.
