According to references in the Green Books, it wasn't reliability of the
SCR-508/509/510/608/609/610 that prompted designing four new sets, it was the
crystal shortage. In the event, by the time the SCR-619 (which in keeping with
the original numbering scheme should have been called SCR-809/810) and SCR-808
entered service, the crystal shortage had been solved. No one that I know of
has ever mentioned seeing any pieces or paper on the SCR-708/709/710 other than
the mention and listing in the Green books.
The SCR-619 of course was an improvement in other ways over the SCR-609/610
and stayed in service into the Korean War. As far as I've heard, the SCR-808
was only or at least mainly used by Security Forces (MP's, etc).
