In the 1946-1949 years I used a SCR-291 HF DF Set
in Berlin to regularly listen to short wave stations
from all over the world, but mostly Europe and the
USA. It had a very good receiver, and used an Adcock
antenna made up of four verticals sitting on a metal
screen counterpoise. That DF set was designed for
medium to long range, but the propagation at night
made the picture a little hard to read. I've done a
lot of QTE's from there. For HF listening to a
familiar station the goinometer could be turned off
and positioned by hand. For you technical types,
each vertical antenna fed directly, (untuned), to
the grids of a 7N7 which whose cathode fed the
coax into the shack. Never saw that again.
