As I was about to respond to this Mike (KK5F) mentioned
the Collins 18S-4. I always thought this was a cool rig.
Basically an ART-13 on the left side (that's to say an
813 modulated with a pair of 811's) with a low voltage
on the plates receiver on the right. Large 20 channel
if I remember correctly or maybe it was 10 selector switch
running down the center with the dynamotor at the rear.
Quite a package. Alabama MARS issued them in the late 60's
and I ran one for a long time on the old 3205KC AM nets.
I remember the 28D7 in the 18S-4 and I believe the 6AJ5.
Just may have to go dig it out and see if it still works.
Anyway one of these day gonna have to meet Mike. I think
he's also in Alabama.

As long as we are on the subject of tubes, the R-392 has no high voltage
or at least in a sense that I understand B+ in vacuum tube radios. The
24 volt input is used to feed all the plate and screen circuits. I do
remember that it used a special audio output tube , the 26A6 but do not
remember if it used regular cutoff pentode ( 6BA6?) in all the other
stages or some special tube for working with the low voltage? has been a
while and I know they have a flock of tubes in them, just do not know
the number. also is their any other military radio, with the exception
of those strange little WW2 LF beacon receivers that used the same
trick?
