[Milsurplus] R-392 Receiver questions...

Hi Greg.
I have a few R-392's from various manufactures -- In addion to Collins,
there was Stewart-Warner, Dubrow to name two. You might be able to find
some markings on the modules, but you'd have to remove them. Some are
easier than others.
Never saw or heard tell of a black wrinkle finish. Might have been a
special order or a very good job by a previous owner. If you look closer,
you might find that the lettering is either raised or "engraved" making it
easier to re-letter after a make-over. I've seen some "Remanufactured by
Stewart-Warner" tags, but all of those, like the others, were olive drab.
I suggest you post your inquiry to the R-390 list. R-392's are also covered
there. My oddest R-392 has no lettering -- all painted over with the wrong
shade of green. Also 100% solid stated. Draw's 80 ma. with the dial lamp
off, 250 ma with it on. I guess our radios should eventually go into the
"Odds 'n Mods" wing of the Boatanchor Museum.

Subject: [Milsurplus] R-392 Receiver questions...
HI all,
I recently acquired an R-392 receiver in excellent condition. I found a
suitable supply, powered it up on Sunday and have been very favorably
impressed with its performance. My question relates to ID'ing the unit.
This R-392 is black wrinkle and it is the original finish as the entire
unit, case and front panel are in black wrinkle with the original silk
screening for the panel. No tag on the front panel and I cannot find any
numbers anywhere on the outside of the anodized chassis.
Anyone have any suggestions of where else to look for ID info?
It has a Collins PTO, with an orange Collins tag.
Thanks,
Greg
