Subject: [Milsurplus] AN/ARC-3
An AN/ARC-3 set made it on the air tonight. About
8 watts on 144.4 AM, but no responses to a CQ. Only
thing heard on the receiver was some packet activity
up about 144.45 or so. The set is just about complete,
T-67, R-77, J-68, C-117 and an AN-104 antenna leaning up in the
window. Only discrepancy is the use of a BC-631 jack
box from an SCR-522 for the volume control.
The radios took a bit to get running, partly because
I did the initial testing using bench supplies instead
of the dynamotors, and it was easy to get the autotune
system out of sequence. Things learned were that the
transmitter does not like low B+, 300V is not enough to
cause reliable operation of the autotune system, and that
burnishing all the relay contacts first would have saved
a lot of time. The ARC-3 uses a lot of relays in the
autotune control system. The only actual repair was replacing the
receiver audio output transformer due to open windings.
Once running though, the autotune system works pretty good.
Now for some questions.
Anyone notice that the receive dynamotor is
quite a bit louder than say a DM-32 or DM-28?
Anyone done any swapping of crystal inserts between
FT-243, CR-1A/AR and DC-11 holders? This will be
an upcoming project with an eye toward getting an
SCR-522 and AN/ARC-3 talking to each other.
Lastly, it seems that just about all the ARC-3 units
I have seen are well used. My speculation is that
most of the ARC-3 units procured actually saw service,
very few were procured only to sit in a warehouse till
surplused. Any comments?
