The ground version of the ARC-27 was the GRC-32.
Came with 28V DC power supply. Tall fiber antenna
poles. Discone UHF antennas. Packing boxes for
all this. Often found as back up in control towers,
bomb ranges, etc. The GRC-27 was same frequency,
but not otherwise the same. Different method of
generating frequencies, different frequency control
mechanical systems. Impossible to align to get the
power out the book said it was good for.
Ol' AACS/AFCS man talking. Trivia: One reason the
ARC-27 was pressurized was to enhance the heat transfer
and cooling. The blower fan, which was replaced with
a feed from a cool air duct in GCA's and some RAPCON's,
circulated the air through a complicated duct about
3/4 inch wide that went all around the inner chamber
which was air tight. ARC-27's were aligned on a
per module basis. Base radio shop had a lot of test
gear for that, and a lot got sent to depot.
