Well, they may have no REAL ham use, BUT I have run many surplus
VHF/UHF equipment her in Manassas, VA just for listening.

Specifically - I had happened to be home recovering from rotator cuff
surgery the week of Sep 11, 2001.

I listened to the FAA, Mil fighter patrols, and the tanker link ups.
The most interesting QSO [sic], was when they were trying to get
Ashcroft back into D.C. from his trip to Milwaukee. It was VERY
interesting to listen as it FIRST turned up as a target to check out,
THEN as an escorted aircraft under NATIONAL COMMAND AUTHORITY <Meaning
Pres. Bush>.

So while no real use for Tx, I have found it VERY interesting for listening.

What most don't realize - Air to air and air to ground comms - are NOT
scrambled. The whole reason is that if your wingman is trying to holler
that a Bogey is coming in on your 6, THEY don't want ANY chance of comms
failing or the time delay in encryption/decryption.
