[Milsurplus] How could radio ops hear anything in B 17, B 24 etc?

My father was a bomber pilot (B17 and B25, others ). He mentioned that the B25 was
particularly
noisy, as the engines were just outside the cockpit. He also mentioned that to hear
anything in the headphones, one had to run the volume all the way up. It's amazing
he had any hearing left.

PS: He recalled also that they called the radio tuning device (don't know which aircraft)
as the "Coffee Grinder"
