Actually, they are legal 29.0 - 29.7 MHz.   Out of consideration for bother 
hams would not use when the band was open, though.   Kind of fun to play around 
with but not for the faint hearted.   Plan to try an over water test next 
summer between the SS Lane Victory and Fort MacArthur with the pair I have.

The vehicle guys seem to love the things, BTW, and keep the prices up ($150+) 
for nice looking examples.

Would urge you to give your 1335 a go.   N3RZU up in MD has a 1335 and W3PWW 
has a 659.   Maybe you guys could get something going at the next MRCA meet.
