Jack,
Most were on the North side of Market between 8th and Van Ness, generally in the Civic center area. The last to go was Standard Surplus, sometime in the late 1970s. It was interesting in the last few years, ham interest had waned in surplus gear as affordable Japanese gear entered the market and there wasnt much nostalgic interest in surplus yet. When Marty's Surplus Mart closed around 1972, they had a few OHd or NIB BC 312s in sealed wood crates for $25 and they were not scooped up fast. Standard was giving away NIB bare aluminum Command Set xmtrs free with any $20 purchase in 1972 and believe it or not some buyers didnt want to take them even for free. Good times.
