ASB, like SCR-268, used lobe-switching to borehole the reflections.

SBD had 2 under-wing yagis & mechanical TR switch between them & Rx &
TX. Idea was tx on left yagi, rx on other & visa versa. Operator/gunner
in rear seat wud 'steer' pilot thru intercom to center the blips on
his "A scope."

Not bad for '41.

"A scope" hinged @ back & bungeed uncder gunner's dash @ front. If it
became gun time, bungy released & scope flopped down. That to make more
room when self-preservation became job 1.

ASB may have helped PBYs find Midway support (not battle) convoy but
probably little else. It could only "just see" a freighter @ 2 miles.
This from oral tradition

And u know a ASB tx mighta been a pretty gud Wurzburg jammer. ~4kw
peak fm 2 15Es... supplied by 15T half-wave rectifier.

Marty... who's pal W2CQH has an ASB TX running but not it's RX. Later
project saved for hope-for appearance of a TR motor-switch

then comes radar on channel 51... 270 miles fm nearest stn
           in KY
