Fair Radio, in the 1960s, used to advertise complete ASB 7 sets unused as I
recall. What kind of picture did the ASB gear display? A PPI scope, an A
scope? Could you really see a radar picture or just a range blip on a straight
line?
Some commercial fishing boats out of San Diego had what looked like surplus
acft radar pods mounted on top of the wheelhouse. the pods looked a lot like
the one I had on my Lockheed P 38(M?) 2 seater plastic model. Looked kinda
like a bomb shape with no fins. I was told that these radars could not present a
360 degree picture but looked ahead and about 45 degrees to either side. The
reportedly could see mountaintops at distances close to 100 miles, a claim I
always doubted when I did the geometry. Were these surplus ASB radars?
