WmD a look @ the TBS hollers "breakthrough!"  The single acorn mixer
and all the 808s.  The garden of big-pin tubes like navy-6D6, etc.
bespeak the 1935-ish design-start.

But the greatest TBS revelation to me was an explanation.  An explanation of
where the hordes of 808s in sirplust were intended.

Tube collectors, ten-huts!

I believe the 808 and the 806 (no GI use?) were RCA's answer to the
california tube-maker threat from tantalum anode, nonex-bulb transmitter 
tubes.  The 808/806 correspond roughly to the 75th/250th
