It's day, however, was quite a bit before the outbreak of World War 2. The
first contracts (TBS) were in 1938, with the next (TBS-1) in 1939. For the
other Navy radios working up at that band (TBP, MK) during the mid 1930s -
yes, the TBS is very complex. One has to see, however, that it could be
"overbuilt" without too much penalty - not field or aircraft, like the
others.

Also, it seems that of the early "UHF" (that's what the Navy called
it) band, the TBS series was clearly the most successful.
