I may as well jump in here with my nickles worth.
FYI someone stated earlier a remark about the
GRC-27 set being somewhat portable. I nominate
that staement as BS of the week. By the time you
stuffed that MT-686 rack with the power
distribution ducting and cable, then the
R-278/T-217/MD-129 sets, you were all done for
the afternoon,,, except for bolting that monster
to the deck,,, as it became very top heavy.AS to
places I know where they were used,,, Every SAGE
and AC&W Radar site had two systems usually
reserved for maint backup while one or two of the
single channel sets (GRT-3 and GRR-7) were down
for maint. There was even one on Mona Island at
the runway on west end of the isla. (there wasn't
any juice on that end of the island, so I don't
know how the AF lit it up) Mona is about halfway
between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic,
smack dab in the middle of the Mona Passage. AF
had a bombing range on an adjacent island for the
B-36's and B-52's from Ramey AFB on the NW corner
of P.Rico. BTW, I just recently bought a CHERRY
R-278B,,, still smells good inside,, all there
including the allen wrenches. I do need a power
input connector for it'tho...(97-3108B 18-22S
insert) (Two pin stuff) But better yet would be
to convert the power in to a three wire
connection, then I'd need a 97-3102A (18-5P)
panel mount w/male insert or just the insert
alone , as I could leave the old shell in
place,,just pop the ring, and the mating straight
connector, 97-3108B with an 18-5S insert.Any luck ????
