Reason for modulated cw was no "on the nose tuning" required.  If you
got a BC-229 acft rx within 10kcs of a '230, things'd get thru.

Even the first(?) acft transcdiver, the BC-11/SCR-68 did radiotelegraph
that way.  VT-2 Coplits osc., VT-2 Heising modulator.  RX was VT-1 grid-leak
det. & two VT-1 audio amp.s.  Amazing 1918 WECo instrument  Amazing.

We still have MCW today as anybody who uses light acft NDBs knows
