I agree about the obsolete part.  I got a RT-196/PRC-6 through
Navy/Marine Corps MARS in 1969.  Imagine my surprise a few years later
(1972) when I was on active duty, to find the Marine Corps still using
AN/PRC-6 sets at the amphibious landing training beaches of Camp
Pendleton (Virginia, not California).  Compared to the Army, the USMC
always seemed to use the older equipment in the Vietnam and earlier eras
(M1903 vs. M-1, M-14 vs. M-16A1, AN/PRC-10 or AN/PRC-25 vs. AN/PRC-77,
H-34 vs. UH-1, etc.).

The AN/ARC-8 (T-47A/ART-13 and BC-348) installed on a US Air Force
T-29/C-131 in which I flew in 1970 was the oldest installation I ever
saw.
