Wim:

According to Chuck Dachis, there is no specific speaker assigned to the
S-27. Hallicrafters had sold 5 different speakers up to 1940, when the
S-27 was sold. Unfortunately, a couple of them had no model numbers
assigned. We discard the DD-CS, made for the DD-1, and the mahogany
models immediately.

The easy one first, the PM-23 was usually seen with the SX-23, -24, -25
and -28, and is 5,000 ohms, so is compatible, but much too fancy.

The R-8 and R-12 are of the correct vintage, but even more overkill, as
they are floor mounted bass reflex designs, using an 8" or 12" speaker
respectively. Also 5K.

The likely culprit, Dachis assigns the number R-8T, (or a 12"
version-R-12T), and it appears to be the first square metal box speaker
with the deco h as a grille, and a chrome band horizontally along the mid
point on each side, likely also was the low price alternative for the
PM-23.

A year earlier (Dachis says the R-27 is 1940 and this speaker is dated
'37 - '39) the 8" tabletop speaker with a 5K transformer was in a black
wrinkle finish box with a grille formed by 8 radial cutouts each shaped
like a paddle, or maybe the cross section of a wine glass, leaving 8
spokes with irregular cross section. You need to get a look at page 111
of the book, I can't do much better in describing the peculiar grille
design. There was also a 12" version with, you guessed it, 12 spokes.

All other Hallicrafters speakers date from after WW2.

Hope this helps,
73,
George
