I'm operating mine off the PP-380/U also. I was of course tempted to put the
connector for the remote in that supply, but I didn't know whether there was
an official modification procedure, so I didn't actually do it.
There was the an external transistor preamp for a non-carbon mikes someone
published somewhere (I have to dig up the article) which was a direct plug
in to the carbon mike input jack, the preamp got the power from the carbon
mike voltage feed. This makes the modulation level higher than the 30% or so
with the original RS-38 mike. Of course the carbon mike could be amplified
the same way, without internal modifications of the transmitter.

It's reported that there is a Navy-issued mod to put that remote
connector
in the PP-380, Robert. Although I don't have a copy of the change
order, it makes perfect sense. So in my book this is a "legit" mod.
