It's a gain vs. risk analysis.

Gain: Less than 1/2 S-unit.

Risk: Operation outside of designed envelope, with unknown consequences.
      Destruction of original components.
      Shortened life of original components.
      Hours of trouble-shooting time.
      Hours of repair time.
Possible further damage during repair (happens to me).
Listening to smart-alecs say "I told you so" ;-).

The scales are are far into the "risk" zone here:
big risks for little benefit.

Getting the last ounce of performance from a war relic
sounds OK if you're working with one that's already been drilled
and hacked. Doing so with an unmodified example,
risking damage seems ill advised.
You must do as you think best, of course;
it is yours, afterall, but I don't recommend it.
If you're having trouble regulating to 400 volts,
I don't think 425 or even 450 is a big deal.
But I wouldn't go to 475 or 500 with mine.
Took me way too long to get this set-
don't want to blow it up for half an "S" unit.
