Good Morning!
Just returned from an extended trip down south (Los Angeles) and I found one interesting (to me)
surplus item. It is a U.S. Navy Mark I Deck Clock <N> (with a circle around it) and the numbers
13138 and the year 1941 under the glass on the front. I expected it to have a 24-hour face but it
has a conventional 12-hour face with a very small second hand that rotates in a small circle (dial)
just above the hub of the main hands. Face is black with white numbers.
The hour dots and the hand tips are coated with fluorescent
paint that looks dingy. The whole clock is about 7 1/2 inches in diameter and 4 1/2 inches deep
with the rear bezel slightly larger than the front. Chrome-plated (or some such) case and a notch
on the rear bezel at about the three O'clock position and a "dog" between the nine and ten O'clock
position which has a hole in the thick end of it - also on the rear bezel. Appears after winding
and setting, the slot (notch) would be engaged on a pin then pressing the clock toward the bulkhead
with a counter-clockwise rotation would secure it in place.
On the rear there is a thumb screw that when loosened will rotate CCW and open four access holes:
"Set Seconds - stop", "Set", "Wind" and "Reg" . Hand-scratched on the rear is an arrow by the "Reg"
access hole pointing to the right and "going fast" written in pencil. Barely visible are the
numbers "3040154" or perhaps "304054" scratched across the top.
These may be as common as dirt to knowledgeable navy surplus types, but it is the first one for me -
would like to have any info on employment/deployment, who made it, and can you get the keys to
go in the back other than making them yourself? (not likely). The thing is heavy for its
size which may translate to very rugged internal construction 52 some years ago.
Thanks for reading all this and the BW.
