Seems that i read somewhere that the Libyan gov't had gathered up the
wreck and quarantined it somewhere. I think there was someone else
trying to look it over and maybe do a recovery of it. Possibly one of
the aircraft restoration/rebuilders. You'd be surprised if you knew
what was out in the desert of southern California!!!! I was down there
numerous times between 1965 and 1968 but saw nothing on Wheelus.
Believe me there wasn't a whole lot to look at!
She would definately have been a major project to get flying again.
Props, gas, tires and batteries would have been the least of their
problems.
I did the same thing Hue did while in Germany on the 60's. Bunker
hunts. Pieces of shoes, old crusty helmet once in a while and lots of
lead. No guns or anything really identifiable in my case. Heard of a
place down in France that was supposedly a parking place for "armor"
that was all grown up with bushes etc and unless you knew exactly where
it was you'd never find it. Land mines were still exploding in Belgium
forrests when wild animals step on them. Army troops at the missle
sites heard them all the time.
Other stories abounded as well. just didn't have the time nor resources
to follow thru on all of them.
I've seen pictures where the melted down aircraft (built a fire under
them) for the aluminum to utilize in rebuilding of the economy. The
picture i have is of a melting P-51 with that wording
