No- no photos of the radio equipment that i recall. If the
discovery had been made in these days, you would have
a videocam recording every step of the way- but 1957
(was it?) was back in the "camera days", i guess, and
even photos were rationed. It certainly would have been
fascinating to have the first discovery people, the oilfield
surveyors, be equiped with a video cam for a tour thru
the thing. Oh well....
If i recall, the fuselage had an obvious non-straight where
the back had broken and was at an angle to the front. I
think the crack must have been near the radio position
because some of the radio gear was mashed.
As i said when we had a LBG thread here a couple years
back, IF the crew had stayed with the plane, or been
able to find the plane, i believe they might have had a
chance to survive, IF they could get any HF radio to
work. But that should have been possible, as the batteries
(maybe) should have held up for a while.
I am pretty sure that control boxes and radio gear not
mashed became souvenirs for some of the visitors.
I don't remember if they sent a distress before bailing, like
locking down the key also. Anyone?
I have also wondered if the plane carried a sea raft with
Gibson Girl set. I suppose not, as it was a Mediterranean jump,
and also, none of the books mention anything like that being
aboard. Wright Patterson AFB display would answer that one.
