This topic reminded me that i have long been curious how
the many thousands of aircraft overseas after VE and VJ
days were disposed of. Were the large aircraft flown
back to the USA? Were fighter aircraft disposed of in
theatre, or shipped back to USA? I have always had a strong
interest in "military junk", including detritus, from way back,
including digging bullets out of bunkers in Germany in my
early years. I always have wondered how the tons of detritus
were disposed of after the war, but not really seen much in
print on this. I saw a photo of a Russian works that processed German military vehicles for steel -
looked like a 3 lane highway of armored  vehicles in greatly varying states of  damage. ( Every
one i'm sure could tell a story to fill a book.)
