The SR-71's were retired for economical reasons. One pilot said he'd do
anything in the world to fly it except pay for the fuel.
The U-2 is still a good value for the money and the mission. The Russians
suckered us pretty well when they shot down Gary Powers. They made it
sound like they had got him with one missile and we believed it and stopped
the flights. Actually they fired over 200 missiles at him in volleys ahead
of his plane and prayed they'd get a hit. They actually shot down several
of their own fighters in the attempt. This was the main reason we dropped
the B-70 program which was a bad mistake.
The SR-71 is the only plane to never take a hit or lose a crew member.
