Gang:
I suspect those thermal fuses have been included in response to several
(numerous) cases of wall wart meltings from shorted outputs. Either bad
wires or dead and shorted NiCads can cause this. Given the
characteristics of the plastic case, a thermal of around 100 C is
probably adequate. Theirs may be more conservative and lower melting
point. A standard or 1 amp. fuse would probably perform the same
function if thermally coupled to the transformer.
RatShack used to sell several sizes of thermal fuses, but since they seem
to be escaping from the parts business, they may not be available
anymore. ECG/NTE has (had, who knows these days) a full selection of
thermal fuses. There used to be another source from which I bought them,
but I'm gonna take Robert's stance and claim Senior Moment, I don't
remember anymore. If, indeed, you have trouble finding them, I'll do
further research. Mouser doesn't show them in their catalog, but claims
to carry the full line of NTE products, so that might be a good place to
start.
