I live a few miles from the coast in the Los Angeles area. No problems
with cars rusting, but maybe cars parked right at the ocean are the ones
affected. I get a salty film on the windshield when parked at beach front
campgrounds. However, I have a serious problem with corrosion spots
noticed through the paint on my boatanchors. I think the suggestion of
starting right out with a dehumidifier in the room housing your boatanchors
is an excellent choice.
Another thought is power line noise caused by a moist salt film on
insulators. I'd suggest you set up a temporary AM mobile receiver and
check out areas where you may purchase a house. Try different times of
day, including a dewy/foggy morning. Use the lowest frequency where you
might operate, or listen on the 200-400 kHz beacon band for an acid
test. If the area is fine, you can run an extension cord from houses you
are considering to your receiver and check noise again. My noise level
continues to increase, now about S-5 on 40, with 80 and 160 essentially
unusable. However, I think my problem is really poorly maintained power lines.
