Actually, you may be confusing Tom Swift, Jr. with Rick Brant. Tom Jr. was
pretty much the head of Swift Enterprises with his Flying Lab, Rocket Ship, etc.

Rick Brant's dad ran the Spindrift Foundation and Rick's adventures were a whole
lot more modest (and realistic). His dad and others were the senior scientists.
