I didn't know Nextel was trying to do something like that, but unless they
hire a crooked lawyer and buy a crooked judge, Nextel has no claim on either
term. I'm pretty sure that Galvin (Motorola) copyrighted both of them in the
40's. Certainly both terms appeared in their ads, as well as in various TM 11's
of the period, plus in at least one post-war QST piece written by a Galvin
employee. And then there are all of the 50's CB ads using Walkie-Talkie for
Handi-Talkie.
