[Milsurplus] TCS transmitter mod: Help

I recently acquired a TCS-5 transmitter that is in good overall condition
but has been modified by a previous owner. The most obvious change was a
missing back panel, but in addition there have been some changes to the
audio circuit. The microphone transformer is gone, and in place of the
crystal rack someone has built what seems to be a microphone amplifier. On
top of the plate mounted in place of the crystals there is a 9-pin miniature
socket (empty) and the shaft of a potentiometer, and beneath the associated
resistors and caps. The mic amp seems to be connected directly to the
microphone/ key jack and the send-receive relay. Four of the six leads on
the CW/Phone switch have been cut as well.

I have my doubts as to whether the transmitter ever worked as I received it,
but I'd like to find some documentation on this mod, as that would help me
greatly in restoring the original connections. I wonder if it wasn't
published in one of the ham magazines. Does it sound familiar to anyone?
So far that's all I've been able to figure out from the schematic. I'm still
waiting on a manual I ordered from Fair Radio, which will help in
determining more exactly the extent of the modifications.
Thanks,
Robert Goff
