There were numerous marine radio suppliers down in SF's Mission or
Potrero district or whatever that is called west of the old docks, at
least one of which was a little skittish to deal with back then, and I
suspect one of their efforts was some of the items you describe.  I
believe they had a fully legitimate operation in the front, selling and
servicing commercial equipment of the day, but if you knew who to talk to
and the right questions to ask, you could buy some of the conversions out
the back door.  Some of the old timers in the Bay area (pre dot-com),
whose ranks are thinning rapidly, could probably cite chapter and verse
if you could get one to talk.
