RWD's comment about re-tuning the i.f. cans such that they're not
stagger-tuned reminded me that I'd read some manufacturers put swamping
resistors on the i.f. coils to broaden the response. I checked the
schematics of several sets, and found that MF/HF sets generally don't have
them, while VHF/UHF ones often do: the ARC-1 and 5, BC-624 (SCR-522),
BC-654, BC-923, BC-1000, BC-733, TCS, and PRC-6 do NOT; the APR-1, ASB-7,
BC-312/342, BC-314/344, BC-603, BC-611, BC-652, BC-659, BC-683, RAX-1 and
RT-68 all DO. No real rule here, as you can tell ... the BC-1000 has
unusual single-coil i.f.'s, but they aren't swamped (I'd bet they're plenty
broad already!); the BC-348 does NOT have them, unlike similar sets.
The value of the resistor varies widely: the BC-683 is as low as
43K, while the BC-312 is about 60-80 meg.The BC-620 is 470k; the RT-68 has
56k on the 1st i.f., with 180k on the 2nd.
I've looked into removing these, as suggested by an article I read
long ago, but they're often INSIDE the awkward-to-remove i.f. can. In
practice, I've never found it necessary: just peaking the tuning seems to
be sufficient. DO try this at home, and let me know how it goes ... it's
always possible that removing the resistor may induce oscillation, if the
stage has unusually high gain, or is close-coupled. YMMV ...	e
