Jim:

Ummmm, I don't know exactly where to start. Connector series designate
interface (mating) standards, i. e. type "N" connectors fit other type
"N", "BNC"s fit other "BNC"s, "TNC"s fit "TNC"s, and so on. Within each
series are plugs, jacks, panel mounts, bulkhead mounts, adapters, and
undoubtedly others which I have forgotten. Also within each series are
different 'number' connectors for different size cables. I suspect maybe
type "N" is the champion in that regard, as I have seen "N"plugs for
everything from tiny RG-300 to 3&1/2 inch Heliax.

The UG-495 is the number of the male plug which fits RG-17 to HN. For
RG-8 size like RG-214, the number is UG-59. There are also other numbers
with other features like armor clamps, etc.

This information is principally derived from T. O. 31-1-59, "Handbook
Installation Practice Manual", "Flexible R-F Coaxial Cables and
Connectors" which every milsurplus enthusiast should have. My copy is
unfortunately incomplete. Which brings up the questions, Robert:
Is there a current version of this T. O.? Do you have for sale reprints
of any of this series?

George
