Many tnx the people who sent me the above interesting reference.
I do note that naturally, the site has an anglocentric view, for
example
it seems to say that the Allies used HF for short range portables,
when this was probably less true of the USA. We had the BC-222/
322 above 25 MHz, ditto TBY, before the BC-1000. The Japanese
also used this range 25+ MHz for their one-tube talkies and the
German forces had several models that operated in the range 33-40
MHz and then up around 100 MHz. Also, i think the article should give
more credit to the BC-1000's ruggedness. I have read of operators
crawling under fire, dragging the radio behind them by the cords or
strap.
The article sez the final operates class C but only is 8% efficient
due
to low drive. I wonder if the bias could be changed to class A,
which
would lessen the drive requirement, and put out more, and have less
harmonic output - if you could keep it from oscillating on its own.
