The SCR-291 HF DF Set must have been a forerunner of the TRD-4.
I used one in 1946 in Berlin Germany. It had two pairs of vertical
antennas, one sense antenna in the center of the square, and wire
mesh counterpoises. Each antenna had an untuned amplifier at its
base (tube was 7N7) and fed individually into a motor driven goniometer.
The rotating goniometer also rotated the deflection coils around the
Cathode Ray Tube. These antennas did not qualify to be Adcocks because
they were not interconnected. As a sideline, I have seen so much
misinformation on Low Frequency Ranges and their antennas that I have
authored a factual dissertation on that subject. It's 9 pages in .pdf
or Word Perfect format. Also, a 4 page on Homing Beacons, Instrument
Landing System Markers, "Z" Markers, Fan Markers and Bone Markers.
NOTE: To be an Adcock an antenna(s) had to have certain characteristics
more than just standing on its end. And, a small loop antenna has
radiation pattern characteristics similar to a pair of Adcocks.
I mean no offense, readers... 73 Clete
