Sorry- he wasn't Signal Corps, just did some of the drilling.
I should have been more specific- in '42 his unit 
used stuff from the 20s and 30s for drills.
They "didn't work" as in there weren't batteries, 
accessories were missing etc.  They were 
more or less "props" for setting up field exercises.
Remember the pictures of early training maneuvers where 
a cargo truck would have "TANK" painted on the side?
His unit got working radios shortly thereafter.
