If you try Dave's trick with the amplified microphone, you might consider=

one thing from the modification that you found earlier.  When you move th=
e
mode switch from CW to AM, the heater supply voltage is removed from one =
of
the two 1625 finals.  If you jumper that switch section (easily undone
later), both finals will be live in AM.  You'll want to, as Dave says,
check the modulation, and lock down the gain pot on the mike after settin=
g
it.  =
