G'day,
Just to vary the input on ART-13 et al. I'd be interested to learn of
the genesis of the ARC -38 /38A. Having one of each and the manuals
that go with them. I expect they were the forebears of the 618T -X
series.
Someone here recently made the comment that it was supposed commercial
versions were subsequent to military versions or at best coincident.
Maybe someone can throw a bit of light in the dark corners and tell
how it came about.
The literature sequence with dates of publication go like this, taken
from manuals I have.
618S-1 manual dated March 1954. A commercial version from Collins
xtal channels.-- anything earlier?.
618S -1 manual dated 1966.... again a commercial manual.
Then the 618 S was adopted by the navy and became the
ARC-38--- manual dated June 1958.
ARC-38A , the ssb version with the stabilised master oscillator early
'60's. and still Navy.
Then in May 62, RCA produces the 618S-1/MC which is identical to all
the preceeding ARC-38A except they substituted their own
"channeliser" in lieu of the SMO, used by Collins. Seems this radio
adopted by the Air Force
I'd be interested to know how RCA got into the act with their later
version--- the S-1/.MC
ART-13. The CDA - T box in mine came via Robert and the supporting
literature for installing the xtal box in lieu of the LF oscillator
says it was developed by the Communication Engineering staff of Pan
American Airways Inc...... manufactured by Gables Engineering Inc.
Dates on the dwg prints from Pan Am say 1948.
if anyone wants to know about the order of difficulty in installing
the wretched thing, I'm happy to oblige.!
Cheers
Pete
