RAX and the YE were designed and fielded about the same time. The first
production contract for the YE was in 1939, I think. It is suprisingly
early for something so high up (246 MHz, generally, and they actually
worked!).

I think some did. And I would think so. The shipboard stuff was likely 
far more stable.

Well, (very) early GOs were junk anyway. I don't know who the brainiac was
that thought putting an 860 in an aircraft transmitter was a great idea.
