My dad was stationed at a SAC RBS site from 1963 to 1967, and from at least
1964 (when I became aware of these radio things) to 1966, the site
used an R-390 (don't know if it was an A or non-A) and T-368 for ground to
air comms-probably as backup if the UHF failed.  IIRC, the frequency was 5710 kc.
In a couple of years of admittedly sporadic monitoring, I only heard it used one
time.

So they were using AM at least up to 1966, at least in a secondary role.
