Talked to a B17 radio op yesterday. Restores old entertainment radios, etc.

Reason for this is D. Stinson's stmt. that "that few if any SCR274Ns were
used in combat. has been debunked."

Don't do that Dave.

I quote from CAF & SARS member Bill Johnson

BC375/348 sure 'got out' for liasson (long range) work. But atmospherics
made their use spotty. The 2 TXs & 3 RXs in '274 ensemble only served for
375/348 back-up and were never employed on missions.

Getting 375/348 set to within a few kcs w. BC221 never worked. But
that things so broad, who cared.

274Ns, however, got revved up for check-out in ground refresher training.

By early '45, all Euro liasson 2-way was via B17s orbiting over
channel w. twin 522s on each. Jurasic repeaters.

(2nd time I've heard/read this story so almost certainly true)

All command 2-way via 522s on one or more of their 4 channels and
tune-up to new xtals/channels was only minutes long.

Take that Dave.

Of course this is just one guy, but it was the "big command-set theater."
And he didn't know original 274N(arc5) intent was interplane or
"command" usage.

Does anyone think this's really true or did "command set" come from
radio row ads?
